How’s Your Spoons?
One of the most challenging things about dealing with chronic illness is trying to explain to someone without chronic illness what it’s like to battle a chronic illness. Phew!! Does that make sense?
Unfortunately there are tons of chronic illness sufferers out there that have fallen into a “woe is me” life, giving running commentary on every ache and pain they feel throughout the day. They can be so draining and often suck the life out of…well…frankly…out of LIFE.
Do you know anyone like that? I’ve known several over the years. One I’ve known extremely well! That would be ME. Yes, I used to be a life-draining, constant-complaining chronically-ill person. I’m not excited to admit it, BUT, I am excited to share the concept that helped me be ill without being life-draining.
It’s called “The Spoon Theory”.
That’s right. Spoons.
You see, I wholeheartedly believe that the main reason some chronically ill people complain so much, and express how badly we feel, is because we actually feel that bad as often as we express.
Yes, we want validation. We want to know that we are being seen and heard in our suffering, but we don’t know how to express this without draining others. So the feelings are real, but if you are like myself or my family, we don’t look sick. So where do we go from here?
The Spoon Theory.
I came across this article several years ago in the middle of my family’s treatment for Lyme Disease. It changed our lives!! In this simple image, we found a simple way to confidently explain AND express our suffering, especially our lack of energy. We started saying things like, “how’s your spoons?” or “Hey, don’t waste your spoons on that!” or “my spoons are running out guys, can I get some help.” We were able to use the theory to explain our situation to family and friends and the girl’s teachers. Valuable stuff!! And just the beginning of what led to some deeper soul searching in regards to life’s limitations, unhealthy self protection, hope in trusting in Jesus with EVERY aspect of our journeys, and so much more.
All from a simple story about spoons.
If you or a loved one is battling chronic illness, whether mental or physical, this theory can translate into so many helpful parallels for you. I hope you find some new truths and hope in this newfound way to communicate your suffering to those around you. Find the CONFIDENCE to let go of any damaging forms of expression you’ve depended on up to this point in your life. Use this simple theory to bring healthy change to your situation.
You are NOT alone dear Warrior.
